Bronx natives, The Russell Brothers were members of the Zulu Nation and were introduced to Larry Joseph by their brother-in-law. Soon after, Larry managed to get them a single deal with Portrait and went on to write, produce and play all the instruments on their only general release, although they did release a special promo only 7″ single the following year for CBS Family Day. According to Larry there was even a video made for the single which featured Cyndi Lauper and apparently they did record more material but nothing was released.

The track was sampled by the Beastie Boys for “Time To get Ill” from their debut Def Jam album. It also became an anthem in the UK on Mike Allen’s hip hop show for Capital Radio. The instrumental was ideal as backing music for the chart.

The promo version, which has the same catalogue number, contains an additional single edit on side A and there is also an unofficial UK reissue from 2012 which is easily distinguished by the smaller series of press rings around the centre hole.
