Alfonso – Time Bomb

Prism (US) [PS 2006] 1986

Alfonso Ribeiro first gained recognition when he played the lead roll in the Broadway musical The Tap Dance Kid. He also appeared as a dancer in Pepsi’s 1984 commercial featuring Michael Jackson and then landed a role in the TV series Silver Spoons. In 1985 he wrote a dance instruction book called Breakin’ And Poppin’ With Alfonso Ribeiro. His most famous role, however,¬†was between 1990-1996 as Will Smith’s cousin in The Fresh Of Bel-Air. Following this role he appeared on TV numerous times and even went on to win season 19 of Dancing With The Stars.

Back to his recording career. He released a handful of singles featuring production from the likes of Sly & Robbie and Maurice Starr but in 1986 it was his final single Time Bomb produced by Mark Liggett and Chris Barbosa that really blew up. It was a rap, freestyle, electro crossover track and featured the uncredited chorus vocals from Jimi Tunnel and the rapping talents of Eddie Ferguson.

The general, promo and test press version included one track on each side but there was an additional test press that included 2 tracks on each side. Both are listed below and all have the same catalogue number. It was released in a Warp company sleeve with an artist sticker on it, some of which were grey and white and some blue and white.

Eddie ‘Kaos’ Ferguson went on to release singles in the group Hostyle with Matt ‘Ammo’ Senatore and George ‘Homicide’ Taylor.
