U.T.F.O. – Hanging Out / Roxanne, Roxanne

Select Records (US) [FMS 62254] 1984

This is the second release from UTFO and is in a similar style to Beats and Rhymes with fast raps and a singing chorus but was very much overshadowed by the B side. ‘Roxanne Roxanne’ was based on a recreation of Billy Squier’s ‘The Big Beat’ and was about dissing a fictitious girl called Roxanne because she was hard to get. Each member of the group told the story of how they tried but were unsuccessful. Unbeknown to them, their track became the start of an era known as the Roxanne Wars and lead to numerous replies from the likes of Roxanne Shante, Elease, Sparky D, Gigolo Tony, Ralph Rolle, etc to name just a few.

There were a few label variations and a red vinyl pressing too, all with the same track listing. Following their second release a UK 12″ was released combining all the tracks from their first two releases with ‘Roxanne Roxanne’ as the titled track. The first pressing contained 6 tracks but it was pressed again with only 5 to conform to chart regulations.
