Dimples D – Sucker DJ’s (I Will Survive)

Partytime (US) [PT-101] 1983

Debut and only solo release from Queensbridge native Dimples D aka Crystal Smith. It was also the debut production from her boyfriend of the time, Marley Marl and was a response to Run DMC’s “Sucker MC’s”. Many of the vocals were then sampled & scratched on future Marley releases.

She went on to form the all-female hip hop group The Main Attraction alongside China Doll and Paradise and they first appeared on the Master O.C. & Krazy Eddie tracks “Masters Of The Scratch” in 1984 and “Private Lessons” in 1985 before being signed to Easy Street.

The track first appeared on Partytime in 1983 on a black and white label and also a colour label. There was also a hard to find purple vinyl version. It was radically remixed in Europe in 1990 by Ben Liebrand using the theme from “I Dream Of Jeannie” and gave Dimples D her first and only chart sucess. There was also another remix by Sanny X called “Resucker DJ” but this was nowhere near as successful. These were issued in the US on Warlock Records and then the original was reissued on the same label in 1992.

After the success of the remix she teamed up with fellow rapper Lady Spice for a couple of singles and an album in the early 90’s.
