Chain 3

Bronx Native Chain 3 was a graffiti artist through the mid 1970’s to early 1980’s. He wrote under various aliases including Tee Bag 170, Dr. Phibes, Ash, Word, etc. and was a co-founder of one of the most influential graffiti crews, T.D.S. (The Death Squad). The crew featured fellow writers Dondi, Skeme, Case2, Zephyr, Mr. Jinx 174 and Peso aka The Great Peso, amongst others. Following a short retirement from the scene he quickly returned as a member of T.M.T. (Too Many Tags).

In 1984 Chain 3 recorded a rap track featuring fellow graffiti artist and Fearless Four member, The Great Peso. It was produced by the legendary Pumpkin (RIP) but sadly never saw the light of day until 2009 when it was released by Dutch label Bivak Records. He provided the cover art for the release and also featured on the new track by Dutch duo Marshall Blueberry which appears on the flip.

Following his 1984 recording Chain 3 went on to appear as a producer alongside Master O.C. on the 1985 Tuff City classic ‘Wrong Girls To Play With’ by Papa Austin & The Great Peso.

Alias: B. Eats, Bedward, Beryl Edward, Jack-O-Lantern, Oliver Shalom

Born Errol Eduardo Bedward, Bronx native Pumpkin was a multi-instrumentalist best known for his drumming skills and was known as the original King of the Beats. He began his career producing records for Bobby Robinson’s Enjoy label before signing with Profile where he continued producing for other labels, such as Tuff City, under aliases such as B. Eats, Bedward and Jack-O-Lantern.

He is responsible for many classic hip hop tracks by artists such as Spoonie Gee, Disco Four, Funky 4+1, Masterdon Committee, Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde, Outlaw Four, Fantasy Three, Great Peso, etc but is uncredited on some, Funkmaster Wizard Wiz’s Put That Head Out and Spoonie’s Get Off My Tip, to name just a couple. King Of The Beats was his debut release as an artist and featured scratching by Scratch On Galaxy aka DJ Galaxy (George Llado). This was followed by the classic, Here Comes That Beat! which featured fellow Profile artists, Dr, Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde and Greg G & Mr. Troy of The Disco Four plus Fly Ty-rone, who only seems to appear on this release, together with Scratch On Galaxy once again. The track was engineered by Dave Ogrin, who provided some additional information regarding Pumpkin…

One story about him always comes to mind. He was a little hard of hearing after working on so many records. He used to like to work at Quadrasonic studios in the B room, which was a small room with giant speakers that were hung fairly close to the mixing board. He always wanted to turn it up as loud as possible, beyond what anyone else in the room could stand for very long. He went to the owner of Quad, Lou Gonzalez, who was a technical genius and asked if Lou could figure out how to make the speakers go even louder. Instead, Lou created a special pair of headphones for Pumpkin which were made from two Autotone cube speakers. These are actual small speakers meant to be used as speakers in a room, but Lou strapped two of those to Pumpkins head and cranked it up. It was insanely loud, but it made Pumpkin happy and saved all of our ears. [Dave Ogrin 2016]

Sadly Pumpkin passed away on August 4th 1990 from pneumonia.

Main Attraction were an all-girl trio including China Doll, Paradise and Dimples Dee (Or could be Dimples T. I’m not 100% certain which but I’ll update this post if I find out for sure).

The group featured, together with The Great Peso, on Master O.C. & Krazy Eddie‘s Masters Of The Scratch in 1984 and Private Lessons in 1985 before releasing their own single, Don’t Be Lost For Words, in the same year. The track was produced and mixed by Dave Ogrin and Master O.C. and released on Easy Street Records.

The following year the group released their only other single, There’s Nothin’ Good About Frontin’, which was produced, once again, by Master O.C. with a little help from Special K of the Treacherous Three. It was the very first release on PKO Records, a label distributed by Easy Street.
