Throughout the early 1980s, Julian ‘Slack’ Palmer was a DJ in and around Soho. He regularly performed at the Wag Club alongside others such as Jay Strongman and Tim Simenon (Bomb The Bass). In 1983 he started as a club promotions manager at Island Records before being offered the role of head of A&R at newly formed 4th & Broadway Records the following year.

He continued to DJ while working at the record label and it was on one of his daily record-buying trips to Groove Records that he purchased a copy of Double Dee & Stenski’s Lessons which completely blew him away. So much so that he vowed to license it to 4th & Broadway in the UK. Sadly, due to sample clearance issues, it never happened. It did, however, inspire him to create something similar.

He managed to get some studio time with his two closest friends: Rob Sawyer, who was experienced in music publishing and a fellow DJ, and Stefan Heller, an accomplished musician and studio engineer. Armed with some records, turntables, and the studio’s early Akai rack sampler, the three set about creating a track based around Ronald Reagan’s ‘My fellow Americans…’ speech. Cut Loose (My Fellow American) was born. Julian knew of Morgan Khan through his days at Island Records but after a formal introduction by Rob Sawyer, Morgan was keen to licence Cut Loose to his label, Streetwave, and a deal was struck. For reasons unknown or long forgotten, except Julian, the trio was credited using aliases.

The Democratic Three went on to complete bootleg mixes of the first two tracks from Bros (You can check I Owe You Nothing Remix here) and Julian continued his Double Dee & Steinski obsession by enlisting Coldcut to remix Eric B & Rakim’s Paid In Full, a track which was already popular but went on to huge chart success with the Seven Minutes Of Madness mix. Following the success of Paid In Full, The Democratic Three also provided a remix for the following single, Move The Crowd.

Julian ‘Slack Palmer ran 4th & Broadway (UK) from 1984 to 1997 and is currently director of A&R at Columbia Records, a position he’s held since 2012.

One thing to note is the credits on the record are mainly fictional names used by the group. Julian Palmer aka Slack aka Glenda Jackson, Rob Sawyer aka Steve Roberts and Stefan Heller aka Jak Shell aka Matt Mario.

Although pictured as a trio on some European sleeves, C.O.D. was actually the production duo of Man Parrish and Raul Rodriguez (R.I.P.)…again! (Two Sisters, Rama, etc). Tired of being ripped off by record labels they created C.O.D. (Cash On Delivery) with the idea to be paid once a track was finished instead of waiting for sales. The trio pictured on some of the record sleeves are session singers they hired to sing vocals and not the actual group.

The electro cover version of the 1974 Gil Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson classic was their first track for Emergency and is a classic of the time. Also worthy of note is the UK release on Morgan Khan‘s Streetwave which included a special mega-mix by James Hamilton ‘The Mighty Chopper’ which incorporated Tyrone Brunson‘s The Smurf.

The following year they also released another cover version, this time of ‘Uphill (Peace Of Mind)’, originally written by Frederick Knight and released in 1975 by The Gospel Truth before Knight released his own version in 1976. The preferred version among hip hop DJ’s at the time though, due to the drum break, was the rock version by Kid Dynamite which featured on the Ultimate Breaks & Beats series of LP’s.

Both releases also included the uncredited keyboard talents of Marcus Barone.

Members of: Full Force Family

U.T.F.O. (UnTouchable Force Organization) originated from Brooklyn, NY. Mix Master Ice (Maurice Baily), Kangol (Shiller Shaun Fequiere) and Educated Rapper aka EMD (Jeffrey Campbell) were high school friends from East Flatbush. Ice and EMD were originally in a DJ group together while Kangol and Doctor Ice (Fred Reeves), brother of Jalil from Whodini, were in a dance group called the Keystone Dancers and appeared in Whodini’s Rap Machine and Magic’s Wand videos.

The group referred to themselves as the Village People of rap due to the specific character of each member. They were not only great rappers but also had some great melodies while Mix Master Ice was a formidable DJ. Together with the production company and later recording group, Full Force, they released many memorable tracks such as Beats & Rhymes, Hanging Out and Leader Of The Pack but are probably most known for birthing The Roxanne Saga with Roxanne, Roxanne which lead to numerous responses by Roxanne’s parents, sister, doctor, etc. The track utilized Billy Squier’s Big Beat.

For personal reasons, Educated Rapper only appeared on Pick Up The Pace from the second album.

Established in 1983, Family Quest were one of the earliest UK rap groups but had only ever featured on 1984’s “Outer Space ’84 Rap” by Automation. The group, consisiting of Dirty Harry (Harry Norbert), E=Mix (Ian Akal), Cheeko MC aka Daddy Hip Hop (Philip Sawh) & Mystery (Michelle Devitt), were regular hosts alongside Tim Westwood & DJ Fingers at Spats club in London’s Oxford Street on a Saturday afternoon.

In 1986 they entered a “King Of The Streets” competition on Mike Allen’s Capital Radio show and won. Their demo won first prize and they were awarded the opportunity to release a single on Morgan Khan’s Streetwave label. ‘Sleepwalking’ was produced by, amongst others, David Toop, author of the classic early 1980’s hip hop book Rap Attack.

They went on to feature in the cult British hip hop show, Electro Rock aka Hip Hop At The Hippodrome, hosted by Mike Allen, and were the only UK act to appear on stage at the legendary hip hop show UK Fresh 86 at Wembley Arena and appear on the accompanying Street Sounds Electro 13 album.

Before Hardrock Soul Movement, Max L.X. aka Maximum Scratch (Maxwell X) and Dave V.J. (Vinyl Junkie) (Dave Morrissey) were originally members of the UK’s legendary Mastermind Roadshow together with Mastermind (Herbie Laidley) and others. As part of Mastermind, they helped complete several remixes for artists such as Aretha Franklin, Scritti Politti, Loose Ends, etc and also assisted in the first of Morgan Khan’s Street Sounds Electro series of albums. Not receiving credit for all their work, they parted ways with the DJ collective sometime around 1984.

The following year the duo appeared as Hardrock when they remixed UK R&B group, Five Star’s, Let Me Be The One, produced by Nick Martinelli. The group still continued with their DJ careers, appearing at the historical UK hip hop event, Electro Rock: Hip Hop at The Hippodrome in 1985 hosted by Capital Radio’s Mike Allen. Other artists appearing included Afrika Bambaataa, Family Quest, City Limits Crew, Junior Gee, etc. Following this, they released several singles as Hardrock Soul Movement for Elite Records, beginning with their electro funk scratch fest interpretation of Do It Any Way You Wanna by People’s Choice, which also included their own Hardrock Throwdown on the flip. The success of this led to two more similar scratch fest singles for Elite including Double Def Fresh and The Beat Is Mine.

The same year saw the duo record yet another classic single, this time for Morgan Khan’s Streetwave label entitled Funky Groove. The track featured legendary hip hop artist, Afrika Bambaataa. They continued in 1987 with Elaweaser, Just A Skeezer which saw a complete change in style to something more in-line with the sound at the time and then in 1989 they released the street soul cover version of S.O.S. Band’s Just The Way You Like It featuring Deborah French.

In the 1990’s Max and Dave hosted their own hip hop show on Kiss FM.

Broken Glass were Manchesters premier street crew in the early 1980’s and were formed in 1983 by brothers, Steven, Michael and Kevin Morris together with Paul ‘Kermit’ Leveridge and Raymond ‘Babyface Ray’ Campbell. There were several additions along the way including Tim ‘Bones’ Forde, Brian ‘Fiddz’ Fidder, Royston ‘Swift Swanny’ Swanston, Danny ‘Spaz’ Price, Kevin ‘Krazy K’ Lowe, Dave ‘Dave The Wave’ O’Conner, Benji Reid, David Chinn, Patrick Booth, Paul Brencher, Michelle Adae, etc. Apologies for any of those I’ve omitted.

They made their home dancing at a club called Legends which featured the legendary electro funk DJ, Greg Wilson. Greg became the crews manager and persuaded them to visit a club named Hacienda where he was a resident DJ on a Friday night and they quickly became the clubs resident dancers. Street crews from around the country regularly visited to battle them.

Taking the idea from the Rock Steady Crew and hoping to gain similar success, Greg joined with Martin Jackson and Andy Connell to produce a single which featured Kermit and Fiddz from Broken Glass. They made a demo of Style Of The Street and started approaching record companies in the hope of a deal. On the strength of the track and a few other ideas, Morgan Khan offered them a deal on his Street Sounds label.

Morgan had the idea of releasing an electro compilation album which would highlight a developing electro scene in the UK. However, with the exception of The Rapologists aka Mastermind, all the tracks were produced by Greg, Martin and Andy under various group names. Three singles from the album were also rush released, of which Style Of The Street was the first, quickly followed by singles from their aliases, Syncbeat and Forevereaction. Tracks using the alias of Zero-G were the only ones from the album that are unreleased as singles.

Please note that the members and aliases I’ve listed above only refer to the actual people involved in the production of the music and not the entire b-boy crew.

Kermit went on to form UK rap group, the Ruthless Rap Assassins, in the late 1980’s together with brothers Dangerous Hinds (Anderson Hinds) and Dangerous C (Carson Hinds). Following the groups split he formed the group Black Grape in the mid 90’s with Shaun Ryder of the Happy Mondays.
