Grandmaster Richie Rich

Member of: Sidewalk (B-Boy Crew)

Alias: Scam, Richie Rich

In his teenage years, Richie Rich (Richard Morgan) was a body popper/b-boy in the crew Sidewalk together with UK b-boy legend, Dolby D. Following Sidewalk’s split, Richie turned his attention to deejaying. He became a popular DJ and worked in London’s Spin-Offs Records, the one-stop DJ shop opened by Greg James. A record label to accompany the shop seemed inevitable and Richie Rich provided it with it’s only two releases, Check It Out and Don’t Be Flash. His name was printed as Grandmaster Richie Rich on the labels but simply Richie Rich on the sleeve of Don’t Be Flash.

In 1986 he began as a DJ on the then pirate station, Kiss FM, with his Good Groove show which evolved into The Rap Academy when Kiss FM became a legal.

He continued in the pursuit of his music producing career, releasing cut-n-paste tracks as Scam and also Turn It Up for Mercury (US), the B-side of which, was the classic dance anthem, Salsa House, becoming a single in it’s own right the following year. Following the highly successful single he then founded Gee Street Records together with Jon Baker and went on to release new US music by Jungle Brothers, Queen Latifah, PM Dawn, etc plus break new UK artists such as The Outlaw Posse and Stereo MC’s.
