Members: Little Dave Ski, Mr. D, Really D

The group consisted of Little Dave Ski (Dave Robinson), Mr. D (Lorenzo Douglas) and Really D (Darryl Reid), although I’m not 100% certain that it’s Really D. If someone can confirm this or has any further information regarding the group, it would be greatly appreciated.

They released two classic disco rap tracks; Philosophy Rappin’ Spree and When You’re Standing On The Top, both of which were reissued in the 2000’s courtesy of Traffic Entertainment. Philosophy Rappin’ Spree also appeared on the B side to Tuff City’s 1994 reissue of the Cold Crush Brothers‘, Fresh, Wild, Fly And Bold.

Chain 3

Bronx Native Chain 3 was a graffiti artist through the mid 1970’s to early 1980’s. He wrote under various aliases including Tee Bag 170, Dr. Phibes, Ash, Word, etc. and was a co-founder of one of the most influential graffiti crews, T.D.S. (The Death Squad). The crew featured fellow writers Dondi, Skeme, Case2, Zephyr, Mr. Jinx 174 and Peso aka The Great Peso, amongst others. Following a short retirement from the scene he quickly returned as a member of T.M.T. (Too Many Tags).

In 1984 Chain 3 recorded a rap track featuring fellow graffiti artist and Fearless Four member, The Great Peso. It was produced by the legendary Pumpkin (RIP) but sadly never saw the light of day until 2009 when it was released by Dutch label Bivak Records. He provided the cover art for the release and also featured on the new track by Dutch duo Marshall Blueberry which appears on the flip.

Following his 1984 recording Chain 3 went on to appear as a producer alongside Master O.C. on the 1985 Tuff City classic ‘Wrong Girls To Play With’ by Papa Austin & The Great Peso.

Members: Barry Michael Cooper

Barry Michael Cooper first appeared on Express Records in 1981 when he wrote and produced the track What Time? using the recording name Teletron. He followed that in 1982 when he produced Maximus Three’s Rock It Out, before joining forces with Aaron Fuchs to produced Tuff City‘s debut release, Beach Boy by Verticle Lines which also featured legendary graffiti artist, Phase 2. In the same year he went on to produce an electro classic, Smurph Across The Surf, using the recording name, The Micronawts, which featured some additional production from Afrika Bambaataa.

Originally issued on a 3-track black and yellow label, due to demand, the track was stripped down by Bambaataa and overdubbed with a live kick drum on top of the 808, courtesy of Aaron, and pressed again on a 4-track black and grey label with a slight variation on the title.

Among his many talents, Barry went on to become an investigative journalist and screenwriter and was responsible for the 1990’s movies New Jack City, Sugar Hill and Above The Rim, sometimes referred to as his ‘Harlem Trilogy’. He also produced Spike Lee‘s She’s Gotta Have It TV series.

Trouble Funk

Trouble Funk was founded in 1975 in Washington DC. With the perfect fusion of soul, funk and rap, they quickly became one of the biggest groups on the go-go scene, following in the footsteps of Chuck Brown & The Soul Searchers.

Originally named simply Trouble, the group changed their name to Trouble Funk  thanks to a stage sign that read ‘Trouble Will Funk You’ with only the words ‘Trouble’ and ‘Funk’ big enough to be read by the crowd.

They debuted in 1980 with the track ‘E Flat Boogie’ on Al & The Kidd Records but quickly followed it up with the now classic ‘Pump Me Up’ which has been sampled by the likes of Grandmaster Melle Mel & The Furious Five, Kurtis Blow, Public Enemy, Teddy Riley and even George Michael. It was first issued in 1980 on a 7″ but the group also released it as part of the Hollyrock 12″. This version was so successful, that the group couldn’t keep up with orders themselves so it was signed to Jamtu Records (Jam Records) for wider distribution and released with a few variations in 1981. There was also a promotional only 12″ that included tracks from the first three Jamtu 12″ releases. It may have been issued prior to these to promote the future releases but that is unclear.

The most famous use of ‘Pump Me Up’ was actually by Philadelphia native and 1988 DMC World DJ Champion, Cash Money on the classic DJ scratch track, ‘Scratching To The Funk’ which was released on Sound Makers Records in 1985.

In 2014, ‘Pump Me Up’ was once again released on a 7″ single as a reissue on Aaron Fuchs‘s Funky Delicacies label, a subsidiary of Tuff City Records. The B side contained another of their classic singles, ‘Let’s get Small’.

After moving to Hollis, Queens at a young age, Davy DMX (David Reeves Jr.) taught himself to play the guitar, bass, drums, and keyboards before perfecting his turntable skills and replacing DJ Run as Kurtis Blow‘s DJ. He took his name from the Oberheim Drum Machine.

He formed the group, Orange Krush, with bassist Larry Smith (R.I.P.) and drummer Trevor Gale. The group only had one release, “Action”, which featured R&B vocalist Alyson Williams but they also played a major role in some of hip hop’s early releases, most notably by providing the music for Run DMC‘s first albums, Run DMC and King Of Rock.

Before his debut solo release, Davy also provided backing vocals for several releases from Kurtis Blow and produced tracks by Spoonie Gee, Spyder C, and Output.

There are also a couple of notable Record Store Day 7″ reissues that aren’t pictured: RSD 2014 saw the release of One For The Treble plus The DMX Will Rock and RSD 2019 saw edits of One For The Treble issued on blue vinyl.

Notes: This release features an electro instrumental plus alternative rap version which featured Queens natives, Leonie J and Sweet Tee. Leonie was the female counterpart to Jerome Prister in Output before appearing on this track rapping in a British accent and Sweet Tee went on to sign with Profile Records and release a number of singles and an album.

There are two label variations for this release, one of which has the Scratch Mix and one which doesn’t. Despite this, musically, both pressings are the same. Both pressings, however, have different track times to those printed on the labels, therefore, I’ve noted the actual times in the tracklist above.

Bronx natives, The Cold Crush Brothers, were Founded in 1978 by the Original DJ Tony Tone (Angelo King) and honed their skills alongside Bambaataa & Soul Sonic Force, Funky Four, etc. They grew to be a force on the rap scene and were well known for their synchronized routines.

DJ Tony Tone was originally a member of The Brothers Disco alongside DJ Breakout and DJ Baron with the original Funky Four. Easy A.D. (Adrian Harris) was in a group called The Asalaam Brothers with his partner Donald D but parted ways to join Cold Crush. The original members were Tony Tone, Easy A.D., DJ Charlie Chase (Carlos Mandes) (Also a temporary DJ for the Furious Five), Prince Whipper Whip (James Whipper), Mr. Tee and Dot-A-Rock (Darryl Mason) (R.I.P.). They were joined by Almighty K.G. (Kenneth Pounder) formerly of the Cheeba Crew and Grandmaster Caz (Curtis Fisher) and J.D.L. (Jerry Dee Lewis) aka The Notorious Two after Whipper Whip and Dot-A-Rock left to join rival group, The Fantastic Five. Money Ray (Eric Hoskins) (R.I.P.) would also be added in the late eighties.

Cold Crush battled their rivals, The Fantastic Five, on many occasions, most notably Harlem World 1981. They battled for a $1000 grand prize and Fantastic Five came out on top but after a bootleg tape of the battle circulated public opinion grew in favour of Cold Crush. DJ Charlie Chase also released the battle on vinyl via Slammin’ Records in 1998 but the original sound and feel was lost after he recreated the beats to make them more prominent. The groups battled again on the basketball court in a staged routine for the cult hip hop movie, Wild Style.

Moving on and all this history culminated in the debut release from Cold Crush Brothers called Weekend released on Tuff City/CBS. Their second single was influenced by the punk rock scene which was sweeping through New York at the time and was one of the first to fuse punk with rap. It was simply titled Punk Rock Rap and featured the line ‘Oh my God…’ which was later sampled on Doug E. Fresh’s The Show.

Following their releases on Tuff City/CBS they released two more singles on Tuff City independently, Heartbreakers and their most successful track Fresh, Wild, Fly and Bold.

Although the group never released an album, 1988 saw the release of Feel The Horns followed by the European only release of the album Troopers. It was released as the Cold Crush Brothers but was actually Kay Gee The All and DJ Tony Crush, a point which was corrected on the 2006 US release.

Grandmaster Caz can now be found as a regular tour guide on the Hush Hip Hop Tours in New York City.

Members: Doug E. Fresh, Spoonie Gee, DJ Spivey, Van Gibbs

The Boo-Dah Bliss Crew were DJ Spivey, Doug E. Fresh (Douglas E. Davis), and Spoonie Gee (Gabriel Jackson), and Pass The Boo-Dah was their only release as a group. Van Gibbs, the father of producer Salaam Remi, also appeared on the track but it’s unclear if he was a member of the group.

This release was the debut on vinyl for Doug E. Fresh, who would go on to release music on Enjoy, Vintertainment, Reality, and later, Gee Street. Already a seasoned rap veteran, Spoonie Gee would go on to release several tracks for Tuff City.

Pass The Boo-Dah utilized the music from UK reggae/pop group, Musical Youth’s, Pass The Dutchie, written by The Mighty Diamonds members, Fitzroy Simpson and Lloyd Ferguson together with Jackie Mittoo.

Born Errol Eduardo Bedward, Bronx native Pumpkin was a multi-instrumentalist best known for his drumming skills and was known as the original King of the Beats. He began his career producing records for Bobby Robinson’s Enjoy label before signing with Profile where he continued producing for other labels,  such as Tuff City, under aliases such as B. Eats, Bedward and Jack-O-Lantern.

He is responsible for many classic hip hop tracks by artists such as Spoonie Gee, Disco Four, Funky 4+1, Masterdon Committee, Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde, Outlaw Four, Fantasy Three, Great Peso, etc but is uncredited on some, Funkmaster Wizard Wiz’s Put That Head Out and Spoonie’s Get Off My Tip, to name just a couple. King Of The Beats was his debut release as an artist and featured scratching by Scratch On Galaxy aka DJ Galaxy (George Llado). This was followed by the classic, Here Comes That Beat! which featured fellow Profile artists, Dr, Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde and Greg G & Mr. Troy of The Disco Four plus Fly Ty-rone, who only seems to appear on this release, together with Scratch On Galaxy once again. The track was engineered by Dave Ogrin, who provided some additional information regarding Pumpkin…

One story about him always comes to mind. He was a little hard of hearing after working on so many records. He used to like to work at Quadrasonic studios in the B room, which was a small room with giant speakers that were hung fairly close to the mixing board. He always wanted to turn it up as loud as possible, beyond what anyone else in the room could stand for very long. He went to the owner of Quad, Lou Gonzalez, who was a technical genius and asked if Lou could figure out how to make the speakers go even louder. Instead, Lou created a special pair of headphones for Pumpkin which were made from two Autotone cube speakers. These are actual small speakers meant to be used as speakers in a room, but Lou strapped two of those to Pumpkins head and cranked it up. It was insanely loud, but it made Pumpkin happy and saved all of our ears. [Dave Ogrin 2016]

Sadly Pumpkin passed away on August 4th 1990 from pneumonia.

Grand Wizard Theodore & The Fantastic Romantic 5

Alias: Grandwizard & The Freaks

Bronx native, Grand Wizard Theodore (Theodore ‘Teddy’ Livingston), is widely accepted to have been the inventor of the scratch and the needle drop.

He began his career alongside his siblings as part of the L Brothers with his brother, DJ Mean Gene (Gene Livingston), serving as his mentor. They were later joined by Cordie-O (Cordie Livingston). He also became an apprentice of Grandmaster Flash.

Realising the need to have MC’s as part of their set-up for their block parties, Theodore recruited schoolmate, Kevie Kev (Kevi-Kev) aka Waterbed Kev (Kevin Strong), who brought along his brother, Robbie Rob (Robi-Rob) aka Master Rob (Robin Strong). They were also joined temporarily by Busy Bee (David Parker) who left DJ Breakout’s crew to join the L Brothers, although he would eventually move on to pastures new. Following his departure, they were joined by Prince Whipper Whip (James Whipper) and Dot-A-Rock (Darryl Mason), original members of Cold Crush Brothers among others, and Ruby Dee (Rubin Garcia).

Initially known as The Fantastic Four, the MC’s became known as the Fantastic Freaks aka Fantastic Five aka Fantastic Romantic 5 and together with Theodore, they appeared in the cult hip hop movie, Wild Style, produced and directed by Charlie Ahearn and Fab 5 Freddy (Fred Braithwaite), where they battled Cold Crush Brothers.

In 1982, following a successful tour with the Sugarhill Gang, the group made their debut on vinyl with the release of the rap classic, Can I Get A Soul Clapp. There are a number of spelling mistakes and name variations for both the group and the record label, all of which are noted below but both the original releases seem to be under parent label, Disco-O-Wax. It was also reissued multiple times courtesy of Tuff City.

Grand Wizard Theodore returned in 1989 to appear on the DJ Jazzy Jay compilation, Cold Chillin In The Studio Live, as Grandwizard & The Freaks.
